I was a reporter for many years. One thing I learned to do was ask … why is this person giving me information? How does it benefit them? Even that can be harmless. But it can also skew things. Always look for the motive.

And we all have our own prejudices and biases which make us tend to believe or not believe certain people. while looking for others motives, its good to look at our own.

This whole thinking thing is very complex. :)
