Jesus Gets Us, … Do We Get Jesus?

The Gospel of John shows Jesus with a balance of truth and grace

The Super Bowl ad, Jesus Gets Us presents Jesus as a loving and affirming teacher who loves you. This is true, but it misses out on “the rest of the story.”

It is true that Jesus accepts us where we are, but he does not want us to stay where we are. He is not there to make you feel good about yourself, and he often called people to repentance. He did accept people, but he never encouraged them to stay in their sinful condition.

Maybe it is human nature to try to fit Jesus into a box — our box.

“He Gets Us” is a “liberal” Jesus, which sounds good but has little power.

There is also the “conservative” Jesus, who is all about rules but runs short on grace.

There is Jesus presented in the Gospels, and today there are two main ideologies that want to make Jesus fit into their world.

The Conservative Jesus

The conservative Jesus points out sin and condemns it. The conservative Jesus can be like the Pharisees Jesus condemns. The conservative Jesus appears to be not very loving at times, more concerned
