a lot of what people think comes from the christmas play, and to write a play you have to make it fit.

Luke chapter 1 says mary went to visit elizabeth

Luke 2 says joseph went up to jerusalem... so they may not have arrived together?

and "while they were there" Jesus was born

yea it ultimately doesnt matter, the story makes more sense though if you combine luke and matthew..
